Helping Americans Trim The Fat This Thanksgiving   no comments

Posted at 10:16 am in Yoga

With Thanksgiving comes the start of the holiday season, synonymous with family gatherings and an abundance of food. To help Americans start their holiday season off right, Gold’s Gym is turning Black Friday into “Trim the Fat Friday.” On November 27th and continuing throughout Thanksgiving day weekend, the nation’s leading fitness authority is opening its doors to the public, free-of-charge, in an effort to help Americans burn off calories from their Thanksgiving feasts. Gold’s Gym trainers and nutrition experts will be on-hand to offer guests tips and advice to avoid packing on the pounds during the holiday season.

“We all tend to overindulge a little during the holidays and, to a certain degree, there’s nothing wrong with that,” said Nikki Kimbrough, Gold’s Gym Fitness Institute expert. “However, with obesity rates on the rise and the holiday season a notorious time of year to pack on the pounds, we wanted to give consumers a fun way to battle the bulge. Our message is simple: Enjoy your Thanksgiving day meal…but along with that turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, come get an extra serving of cardio, squats and yoga!”

The average Thanksgiving feast contains 3,000 calories and 229 grams of fat. When working out, here’s some food for thought on what it takes to burn off the calories found in traditional Thanksgiving favorites:

• If you’re looking to burn off the 438 calories you’ll take in from 10 ounces of light meat, your best bet is to take a Pilates or yoga class, while a group weight training class will give you the edge to burn off the same amount of dark meat (524 calories)

• It takes about a half an hour on the treadmill to burn off 1 cup of stuffing (340 calories)

• To work off all the 180 calories found in cranberry sauce, you’ll need to spend 15 minutes on the elliptical machine

• Pumpkin pie (320 calories) requires 25 minutes of a vigorous workout on the stationary bike, rowing machine, or stair climber
Consumers are welcome to show up at any participating Gold’s Gym between Friday, November 27th and Sunday, November 29th to take advantage of their free “Trim the Fat Friday” workout. (Limit one workout per customer, must be local resident with identification.) In addition, health and fitness experts will be on-hand to provide consumers with a free fitness consultation.

Yoga Alliance, the non-profit organization dedicated to improving lives through Yoga, announces Saturday, January 23, 2010 as the date for Yoga Day USA 2010. A Yoga Alliance community event held in yoga studios, community centers, parks and beaches across the country, Yoga Day USA is an opportunity for Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teachers (RYTs) and schools (RYSs) to raise awareness and change lives through the proven mental and physical benefits of Yoga. In the spirit of karma yoga, or service to others, hundreds of RYTs and RYSs throughout the U.S. will host free or low cost workshops designed to meet the unique needs of their communities. Many of these workshops will raise funds or in-kind donations for local charities.
In 2009, 344 Yoga Day USA events took place from Maine to California — a 144% increase over 2008. Thousands of Americans including the young and old, flexible and not so flexible, athletes and couch potatoes came together to stretch body, mind and spirit.
